American Idol vs. Politics (We sing, You Decide)

Well folks, I missed my first day of blogging yesterday.  I was so mad at myself.  I had so much to say but no time to say it.  It may be a good thing because I was in the mood to go off about the changes facing our great city of Douglasville that I witnessed at the Taste of Douglasville.  The utter repulsiveness of the clientele of this town has gone to pot.  Put it this way, I have never seen so many Bluetooth sets in one place in my life.

It may be a good thing that I was extremely busy at work.  What do these people think I come in here to do?  Work?  Shouldn’t I just be getting paid to blog, chat and e-mail my way through the day?  Be careful before that sarcasm drips on your head.

Today I was cruising to work and heard someone discussing the finer points of American Idol, if there are any.  Now don’t get me wrong.  I have been an American Idol follower since Season 2.  It is rather enjoyable, especially seeing the crazies they start the season off with.  It does get disappointing though around the final 8 – 10 contestants because it turns into a popularity contest and not a talent competition.  Anyway, I digress.  What made me lose just a little more faith in where this country is going is someone who called in saying “Does anyone else find it shocking that more people vote for contestants on American Idol compared to the Presidential election?”

What a complete moron.  Does this person realize that their are not that many people voting for American Idol?  Of course I say that comparatively.  I decided to do little research and found these results……. There are many, many more of these morons out there.  There is website after website devoted to this topic.  They all us the same line, “In the complete 2005 season of American Idol just over 500 million votes were cast.  In 2004 the American Presidential election garnered a paltry 122 million votes”.  Let’s use a little common sense here folks.  Let me break it down.

· 500 million votes cast in American Idol.  Divide that number by 12 (The number of shows for just the top 12).  That gives you 41,666,666.67 votes per show.  Also remember, there are a few weeks of shows before that where people vote also, so that number is truly lower.

· In a presidential election you vote once, unless you are a Democrat or dead.  In American Idol there is no limit, especially with the text message votes.  I won’t even take a stab at how many people voted multiple times.  To keep it simple I will only use the “Top 12″ Shows.

· Now this is the easiest – Presidential Election 122,000,000

                                           American Idol 41,666,666.67

Notice the difference.  Yeah, a lot.  I know you are thinking this has got to be the lamest blog ever.  However, I disagree.  There is way too much at stake in this world and our country to worry more about American Idol than about our government giving us the old “squeal like a pig” treatment.  It’s not normal for 25% plus to be taken out of my paycheck every payday.  It’s not normal that I can’t pick my nose without some kind of government regulation.  Did you know that you can’t call yourself an Interior Designer without taking a government-mandated test?  If you use those terms and get caught you can face fines.  You can practice Interior Design but you are not allowed to call yourself and “Interior Designer”.  How flat out stupid is that?  Yet we care more about someone winning a singing competition.

Just another example of the stupidifying of America.  (That’s my new word)  I was at the local Wal-Mart at lunch today picking up some supplies for our camping trip this weekend.  The camping section is right next to the Automotive section more directly car stereo.  Someone felt the need to place one of the radios on one of Atlanta’s finest urban stations and turn it up for the whole store to hear.  As I was browsing the supplies looking for Dissolving Toilet Fresheners, the talk show host came on and started talking.  She brought in a caller who could barely form a sentence.  She was talking to this caller about a promotion for $500 worth of free gas and how gas prices are high, blah, blah, blah.  The caller barely said anything.  She just sat their making weird breathing sounds on the radio.  Most likely a mouth breather who complains about not getting enough welfare or not having enough money for her thirty kids.  Yet she obviously eats plenty and has a cell phone and satellite TV.  As soon as the host said something in regards to Mariah Carey and her new husband, this woman pepped up like a Chihuahua on crack.  She couldn’t put the food down fast enough.  All I could think was, what a waste.  To think, this will probably be the person who cancels out my vote for President.  Scary Huh?

Just know this is the direction our country is heading unless some people step up and step up soon.  Remember 25% or more is not the norm to be taxed on for your pay.  I’ve got an easy fix for that.  It’s called the FairTax.  Click on the link and read about it.  I will have to blog on that one day soon.  If you like it, sign up.  The more congress sees we care the better chance we have to get something done.  The more interest we show in American Idol and the celebrity worship that we have, the more and more control they will take.

Until next time.
